Turo is a peer-to-peer carsharing marketplace. It allows private car-owners to rent out their vehicles via an online interface.〔 Car owners can set their own prices, and the company takes 25%. The service launched in Boston in summer 2010, in late 2010 it expanded to San Francisco, and in March 2012 it launched nationwide in the US. It has received $52.5M in funding from Canaan Partners, August Capital, Google Ventures, Shasta Ventures, and Trinity Ventures. The peer-to-peer carsharing concept of Turo was inspired by similar online marketplaces such as Airbnb and eBay. People who wish to profit from their cars while they're not being used can register the cars online to be borrowed by other Turo members. To make the car available, a car owner that has signed up for Turo signs onto the network and states the time and place where the car will be available.〔 A member who wishes to borrow a car will reserve a specific time slot for the car online, and pays for the amount of time they signed up for.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 publisher= RelayRides )〕 Hidden fees are added. Renters are required to pick up the car at the owner's home, or pay a delivery fee of $40. A additional pickup fee of $40 is also charged if the owner has to pick up the car. For many cars, delivery/pickup are not available at all. Scheduling is also an issue. You must book the car at least 24 hours in advance, and there is a three day minimum. Most owners prefer the long-term arrangements, so bids for the minimum jobs are rarely accepted. The owner has 8 hours to get back with you, or the bid becomes void. Therefore, it can take several days to book a car. The late fee if the car is not turned in on time is exorbitant. For example, bringing the car back 3.5 hours late costs $200, twice the 3-day rental fee. When you add $80 for pickup/delivery and $200 late fee if you return the car late, Turo is more expensive than your standard car rental. Furthermore, since the cars are privately owned their maintenance is unpredictable. The owner doesn't promise perfect working order and no roadside assistance is available.
